The Coaching Electric | Presentation Notes

November 14th, 06 10:05 pm | Posted by Andrea

Although it’s not a substitute for the recording, available soon at the International Coaching Federation website, or attending the TeleSeminar version we’re offering at this site soon, here are my presentation notes, also in the raw, for your ‘following-along’ pleasure as you review the slides.

(1) Intro with Story: So it was the end of year 2000……this is where it all began and how we came to be together to talk about the Coaching Electric today.

Some might say - but for a single email, this presentation was lost. :)
(2) During the conference, we’ve heard two keynotes speakers say interesting things about storage.

Dan Pink - billion dollar industry. supports his thesis that meaning, story, symphony are important.

Lynne Twist - storage industry as symptom of our consumer economy, excess.

I’d like to talk about storage in a slightly different way.

Storage facility that’s between your ears.
Storage facility not a thinking Facility. So…to change that up a little bit. Ears. Mental decluttering. Eargasm exercise.

(3) I’ve spent the last 5 years of exploring intersection of technology and coaching. Observing and participating in the building of million dollar coaching businesses.

3 Main Observations life/coaching/technology.

- technology reinserts silence.
- technology strengthens and extends the sacred container.
- technology gives us a way out from the tyranny that big dreams can become. = freedom.

The ICF is getting ready for a conference with 11,000 attendees in 10 years. How will they do it if not with technology? Without technology, isn’t that big dream heavy?

(4) 1 major question for you to consider when approaching any technology and asking ’should I?’

- Who do we become when we use a particular technology?

I’m not a blind proponent of technology. Today is not about shiny new technology. It’s about using the technology we already know and use, in a maximal way.

(5) Three case studies…and if time, a fourth.

This is a celebration - it’s my privilege to showcase and brag on these four extraordinary coaches.

And, as much as that is true…you ain’t seen nothing yet.

One thing I hope to prove to you is that because of the impact of technology in the lives of these coaches, significant leadership is being called forth.

That’s what happens when we use technology well. We become better versions of us.

Much of what was on my “wish list,” where I spent my electronic checks, actually surfaced in reality. My fiancée and I were able to re-do our basement, get a new furnace, plan a Hawaii trip for our wedding, all without worry. The stress of spending money has lessened.

I played the game for about 30 days or so last month. In the first 9 days on this month, my business has made more than what it did in the first two months of this year! Thanks to the designers of this wonderful prosperity game :-)

Share highlights from Pam:

I started blogging in October of 2005. The podcast started on my 40th birthday … August 28, 2006. (I started the blog as an assignment for Suzanne Falter-Barns’ Get Known Now class)

How many subbers?

Blog: With RSS and Feedblitz together, average around 1500-2000 and growing
Podcast: Baby steps! About 200 after 4 episodes

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between blog and podcast since many of my podcast listeners come from my blog readership. This will change as I get more episodes and do more promotion. But I will say that the sum total has had these results:

In terms of attracting mainstream press, I have been featured in or consulting as an expert for articles:

-USA Today Blog and interview for feature story in paper (story hasn’t been published yet, hopefully soon)
-Baltimore Sun podcast (will air in a couple of weeks - the reporter liked it so much, he is going to do a follow up 5-part podcast series with me about business blogging)
-Boston Globe and 20 other papers (I don’t know all of them .. it was syndicated)
-Jane Magazine
-People Magazine
-Greenstone Media (first women-owned radio network where I was invited as a special guest blogger, and got to interview Gloria Steinem)
-David Batstone’s blog (co-founder of Worthwhile Magazine and founding editor of Business 2.0 - but then, Andrea, you knew that since I learned of him on your teleclass!)
-Tom Peter’s blog (that freaked me out!)
-CNET
-Canada’s Edmonton Chamber of Commerce publication which goes out to 200,000 businesses (Andrea and Tina - this is for you - even Canadians like me!)
-Video blog interviewed by Amanda Congdon, of former Rocketboom fame, and huge visible face on YouTube and the internet

And this fact may be relevant only to hardcore bloggers, but in a period of one month, I was blogged about by 5 “Technorati Top 50″ bloggers (referred to as the “A List”) including:
-Guy Kawasaki (he has blogged about me 3 times, last time on Friday Oct. 27)
-Doc Searls
-Hugh McLeod of Gaping Void
-Kathy Sierra of Creating Passionate Users
-Garr Reynolds of Presentation Zen

My own blog ranking on Technorati went from somewhere like 35 million to its current stat of 2,875 in a period of 5 months. That is out of 50 million blogs tracked.

I have also been approached by business partners like now frequent collaborators Startup Nation (I am doing a number of joint ventures), had coaching prospects increase by 1000% and had the editor of a major book publisher contact me with great interest in doing a book.

- Coolest claim to fame for me sparked from the Guy Kawasaki mentions, then the proceeding firestorm of hits and activity (20,000 hits in 3 days … and about 250 incoming links) .

I just about died when I saw my blog linked to on Tom Peter’s site. But what is the best result of all this is that I am actually building relationships with these bloggers and entrepreneurs, and other very cool and smart people in my business space such as Professor Bob Sutton from Stanford University’s Business School and Stanford Technology Ventures group.

No amount of marketing, branding or selling efforts replaces mutual respect from people that I consider the bright stars and cool people in my field! And I have “cracked the nut” of garnering respect from a very coach-wary demographic … technology wizards like software engineers who flock to my blog in droves.

I see the blogging world as being brutally egalitarian with respect … if you use your blog or podcast to just market your services, you will be flamed out, and not see any growth in readers and ranking. But if you speak and write from your heart, provide useful, interesting and encouraging information, the “street cred” you gain is amazing. I have been truly stunned by the power and connection unleashed by my blog. I feel very blessed.

- ‘Proof’ of Pamela’s Coaching Effect:

“Hi Pamela,

Just wanted to say a quick thank you. I’ve been a part-time entreprenuer for the past couple of years, and some of your recent posts finally gave me the push I needed to go full-time, starting today.

Keep up the good work :-)
Scott”

“Pamela,

I read your “Open Letter” in David Batstone’s Right Reality newsletter this morning. I was cheering all the way. I think there’s a lot of frustrated HR, leadership & development, and corporate coaching folks out there ready to try another approach. I left the field about 5 years ago, but it’s never far from my radar. I can imagine your letter getting into the hands and hearts of people experiencing workplace oppression and insisting on something more. Please let me know if I can help.

Warmly,
Cheryl”

“Pamela,

- All as a result of writing a succesful blog in the past year, I now have the following things lined up:

-Impending book contract (working on it, but looks very good)
-Hungry audience for new services (since this is a new biz direction for me, I am still developing products and services for sale, so I don’t have concrete difference in increased sales)
-Lucrative joint venture partnerships
-Thousands of thoughtful, fun, interesting and supportive readers from all over the world
-Cool people like ANDREA LEE (my coaching hero) wants to use me in a case study. (OK, I will suck up now, but I love you Andrea! I am honored to have you talk about me.)
-And the best part? It has been a BLAST and I have done it while raising my little munchkin at home, hardly ever leaving Mesa, Arizona. If you told me a year ago that all this would happen as the result of writing a blog, I would have told you to stop smoking crack.

-I will say Andrea, that the only caveat for your audience to know is that I was a successful self-employed management consultant for 10 years before starting my blog … so I did have some professional street cred and lots of stories before starting. That said, the Escape from Cubicle Nation direction was totally new, as was moving my biz to work with individuals instead of corporations. And I had never even read a blog before I started mine - it was a totally new world to me.

(11) Bonus Case Study #4

Simple, anyone can do.

Coco Fossland. www.WorldChangingBusiness.com

Action STEPS:

Create a list of people you’d like to reach
Find their website
Shortlist those who have a permission asset
Write a templated email and subject line; then personalize
Answer the three questions: Is it worth doing, is it going to work, are you the one to get it done

Tips to get in touch:

Piggyback on their publications
Relate and respond
Ask for one thing at a time
Do the work yourself

(12) Leadership for the shy…technology as a container for leadership development. Technology is blind…and an incomparable tool to generate leadership in us, especially on our leading growing edges…self-expression as individuals.

(13) Fear of Success:

You still must do the work of coming up with something worth systemetizing with technology - not off the hook with that…

(14) CLOSE:

Like Lynne said, it’s not the new and shiny necessarily. How can we get more out of what we already have?

Remember that we invented it.

Relationship with technology. bend ourselves around technology. we bend technology.

“There is no spoon.” - There is no spoon? “Then you’ll see that it is not the spoon that bends. It is only yourself.”

Thank you for your presentation on Coaching Electric. I learned to let the technology to bend around me, not the other way around. Just do it…even with email! I look forward to more resources.

Thanks again Andra. I attended your breakout at the conference and the bonus teleclass. The presentation inspired me with possibility both times. I would be interested in the blogging book also. I’d like to know how to take advantage of the discounted offer. I can’t wait to see what becomes of all these new means of sharing myself with the world. It’s all a bit overwhelming right now, but I’m confident it will all fall into place. I’ll just keep showing up and treasures like you will show me the way. Thanks for sharing yourself and your experience.
